People who were chosen to be part of a wedding usually offer to shoulder some expenses. Below are samples of expenses usually being shouldered by ushers, bridesmaids, and groomsmen:

Bridesmaids:

Their dresses, shoes, and accessories. (Sometimes, these are provided by the bride)
Gift for the couples
Transportation and accommodation if not provided by the bride

Ushers and groomsmen

Their dresses, shoes, and accessories. (Sometimes, these are provided by the groom and his family)
Bachelor dinner
Wedding gift
Transportation and accommodation if not provided by the bride.
Hope this helps.. :)

The above is what happens in USA, and bears no relation to a UK wedding, where the bride will normally pay forBridesmaids - dresses, shoes, accessories, and transportation to the wedding.

Unless it is a very formal wedding, where the Groom will pay for the normal Morning Dress, waistcoats and Top Hats, Ushers and the Bestman will normally wear their best suit, often trying to co-ordinate as best they can.

Ushers play the role of showing guests to their seats at the Ceremony and greeting the other guests whilst handing out Order of Service or Hymn books. Ushers are not usually appointed for Registry Office or Civil Ceremony in UK.
